Molecular Microbiology

Microorganisms live as free-living or in association with other organisms in the environment. These organisms plays significant role in the biogeochemical cycles and are known for secreting several secondary metabolites of biomedical application. Some of these bacteria are pathogenic to humans too. Isolation and identification of bacteria are mandatory for exploring the biotechnological potentials of these organisms, which needs theoretical knowledge and practical skills. We offer technical program specifically for the isolation of environmental microorganisms, their purification and identification through marker gene sequencing. Skills in molecular identification of pathogens are highly demanded for postgraduate students aspiring their career in research, job as technical experts in various biotechnology, food processing, aquaculture and water related industries.

Our Objectives

Support postgraduates in science to up skill their capabilities in Molecular microbiology
Support researchers to improve the quality of their thesis with molecular biology tools
Provide molecular biology workspace and guidance for research scholars and early career researchers to implement their assays

Major activities

Training programs and work space: We offer training programs in basic microbiology and molecular biology tools for isolation and identification of bacteria from aquatic ecosystems. The syllabus of the program will include both theory and practical course on isolation and maintenance of microorganisms, DNA extraction, PCR primer design and amplification of marker genes, screening of microorganisms for the presence of NRPS and PKS gene, agarose gel electrophoresis, purification of PCR products, cloning of genes for sequencing, sanger sequencing PCR, analysis of sequence data, creation of phylogenetic tree and submission data to NCBI. Lab space and technical guidance also will be provided to researchers for implementing their assays by themselves.

Technical services
